Alien Weaponry's new music video for their song Kai Tangata explores a brutal part of Aotearoa's history.

Northland's thrash metal band Alien Weaponry have dropped their latest song from their upcoming debut album Tu.

The powerful new single, and music video titled Kai Tangata, was released today.

Speaking to TVNZ1's Te Karere the band members Ethan Trembath, Henry and Lewis de Jong explained how the track explores their cultural heritage, and is inspired by the early 19th Century Musket Wars in New Zealand.

"A lot of the northern tribes had muskets, and they came down and pretty much took vengeance on all their previous enemies with these new lethal weapons. So it's about the Musket Wars period of New Zealand history," said Henry.

"It was kind of Game of Thrones like, there's a lot of brutal parts of New Zealand history."

The de Jong brothers said the song was also inspired by their award-winning manager, and dad Niel's stories.

"It was stories from dad, he's always full of stories about our whanau history and the history of Aotearoa," said Henry.

The band's debut album Tu drops in June ahead of their first European tour in July.
