The storm front moving across the North Island today has produced dramatic results already in Taranaki, with lightning striking a local's trampoline right in front of her.
Trish Rankin was filming the storm out her window when the lightning hit on "what felt like the other side of the window".
"I'd just dropped kids and hubby off at school to go on school camp and the fork lightning was hitting [the] ground!" Ms Rankin wrote.
"I've never seen anything like it."
Severe weather watches and warnings are in place for much of the country today and the first of the year's proper winter storms moves in.
