Watch: Lightning strike in Auckland hits tree creating large fireball

December 4, 2018

Amy Buncuga, who recorded the strike, said she had to mute out her scream before sharing the video.

As Auckland experienced its wettest December hour on record today one resident caught on video a lightning strike that appeared to temporarily engulf a nearby tree in flames.

Amy Buncuga was recording the storm from inside her Blockhouse Bay home at about 8.23am when the streak appeared.

"I just s*** myself," she joked on a Facebook post this morning, adding that she had to mute the video before posting because her scream was so loud.

The video has already been viewed far and wide, with hundreds of people having shared it during the first two hours of it appearing on social media.

Today’s storm has already set records, with Auckland logging the wettest hour for a December on record.
