December 16, 2018

Williams began his time with TVNZ as a sports reporter and never looked back.

Peter Williams has presented the 1 NEWS bulletin for the last time this evening, after a career that spanned nearly 40 years in the New Zealand TV industry.

Williams received a guard of honour as he left the studio for the final time.

During his final sign off the veteran broadcaster thanked colleagues and the public.

"To my colleagues over the decades thank you for your talent and hard work and support but most importantly to you our audience.

"Thank you for your extraordinary loyalty which makes this the most watched programme on New Zealand television every day.

"Maybe we'll meet again," Williams said with emotion in his voice.

A look back at his prolific TV career with TVNZ was also presented by fellow news anchors Wendy Petrie and Simon Dallow.

Wendy Petrie and Simon Dallow were on hand to farewell Williams in his final 6pm broadcast.

TVNZ CEO Kevin Kenrick gave the following tribute to Williams, as he embarks on the next chapter of his life.

"After close to 40 years working in TV, it’s hard to recall a time when Peter hasn’t been on our screens. He’s a consummate professional, and his longevity is a testament to his enduring popularity with viewers.

"On behalf of all of us here at TVNZ I’d like to thank him for the massive contribution he’s made to TVNZ and wish him every success in the next chapter of his broadcasting career."

Williams began his broadcasting career as a sports reporter, covering the Commonwealth and Olympic games and cricket.
