Watch: Labour's Kiri Allan lays down some slick spoken word poetry and praises Jacinda Ardern in maiden speech to Parliament

November 9, 2017

Labour MP Kiri Allan has given an entertaining maiden speech to Parliament where she praised Jacinda Ardern and even laid down some slick spoken word poetry.

Ms Allan began her address with a beautiful Maori waiata before talking about her "humble East Coast upbringing".

The new Labour MP also had some kind words for Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

"Prime Minister Ardern has compassion and empathy and connection to the people we seek to serve and under her leadership I feel like we are on the precipice of true change," she said.

Near the end of her speech Ms Allan entertained the House by giving a passionate performance of a piece of spoken word poetry she wrote as a 17-year-old on the grounds outside Parliament.

"Being strong in our identities, fostering visions of equality, strong people and strong communities, yeah," her poem finished.

Ms Allan has been popular around Parliament, bringing in her newborn baby to the debating chamber alongside fellow mum, Labour's Willow-Jean Prime.
