Watch: 'Jesus, it's massive!' Great white off popular Auckland bay pops snout out and gives freaked boatie a little nudge

An Auckland boatie has been left reeling this week after an encounter with an unexpected visitor while out fishing in Stanmore Bay.

Staffan Karl Gustav Ljunggren yesterday uploaded to Facebook footage of what is confirmed to be a great white shark circling a fishing boat in the bay over the weekend.

Mr Ljunggren was sent the footage by his friend Sean, who recorded the video.

The footage shows the shark sidling up to the fishing boat.

You can then hear a man behind the camera saying, "Jesus, it's massive".

"It just stuck its head right up out of the water... it's about 10 or 12 foot long and I'm freaking out here," the man in the footage says.

After seeing the footage, Department of Conservation marine expert Clinton Duffy told 1 NEWS NOW the shark looked to be between 2.5m and 2.7m long.

At that size, it was a juvenile great white, he said.

"There are fairly regular sightings of white sharks throughout the Hauraki Gulf each year, including places like the outpost off Leigh, off Tiritiri Matangi and in the upper Waitemata Harbour," Mr Duffy said.

"Most sightings are of sharks attracted to fishing boats but a few have been made by divers."

The video has been liked 140 times so far and has been shared more than 160 times on Facebook.
