The Prime Minister revealed that parenthood was one of several things she discussed with the former US President.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has revealed that she will long remember Barack Obama’s tips around parenthood and leadership after meeting the 44th President of the United States in Auckland today.

Ms Ardern said she most relished the chance to ask Mr Obama about the nature of leadership during a wide-ranging discussion at Auckland Government House.

"I asked him on his views about different elements of leadership and also parenthood and he had tips that I will probably long remember," she said.

"The question I asked was simply about how do you deal with guilt (as a parent) because I have no doubt I am going to experience that in the future as I juggle the roles that I have.

"His insights were, I'm sure the same as any parent would probably give me, that you do your best."

The pair also discussed the future of politics, particularly progressive politics, and pressing issues like climate change.

Ms Ardern maintained that the conversations were general rather than about any particular crises.

His trip has been a whirlwind tour of luxury golf courses and a stirring Maori welcome.

"I’m a political nerd, I wanted to make the most of it," Ms Ardern said.

Mr Obama is speaking at a gala dinner in Auckland tonight before jetting home tomorrow.
