Watch: It's Turitea! Palmy school children's rousing haka celebrates correction to misspelt school name

November 20, 2017

Palmerston North's Turitea School was incorrectly named Tiritea School back in 1895 when it was founded.

Children of a Palmerston North School have performed a celebratory haka after a decision was made to rename their school, correcting a 122-year- old typo in its name.

Turitea School was incorrectly named Tiritea School back in 1895 when it was founded.

It was misspelt and mispronounced as 'Tiritea' by the local council and remained incorrect until now.

Last year whanau members suggested to the school board that it was time to put things right.

In 2018, the school will open for the first term with the proper spelling -Turitea.

"I think that it is really really important that we've made this decision. The name now has meaning in Maori and it pays tribute to the Rangitane people," principal Glenys Murphy told TVNZ 1's Te Karere.

Chrissy Severinsen of the board said there've been some mistakes in the past "and this is our opportunity to make things right, so as a board and as a school community we've seen this as the right thing to do".
