GNS Science has released a video which shows the sheer scale of the seabed uplift which took place during the magnitude 7.8 quake near Kaikoura.
In the video, aerial footage shows the Papatea Fault, which has significantly risen on one side due to the quake.
Close up scenes with a GNS Science scientist show that the lift is somewhere in the region of two meters, and has risen by several more meters further out to sea.
Dead sea creatures can be seen among the drying seaweed, including fish, crayfish and paua.
The area remains completely cut off by multiple large slips and landslides across State Highway 1.
