Watch: Heavy security presence outside Barack Obama's Auckland hotel on last day of NZ trip

March 23, 2018

Police can be seen entering the Sofitel in Auckland.

A heavy security presence can be seen at Auckland's Sofitel Hotel, where former Us President Barack Obama stayed on the last night of his New Zealand visit.

Mr Obama spent last night speaking at an exclusive dinner with MPs and well-known New Zealanders such as health advocate Dr Lance O'Sullivan and director Sir Peter Jackson.

Westpac’s Simon Power and Pacific youth leader Bhavna Lata were also there.

Today Mr Obama will today meet with Wahine Toa, a group of Maori women leaders.

Recounting the night of TVNZ1's Breakfast Mr Power described Mr Obama as "impressive" and said he "held the audience in the palm of his hand".

Today, police can be seen around the Sofitel Hotel, and at one point about six officers walked into the building.

Mr Obama also met PM Jacinda Ardern, where they spoke about the future of politics, particularly progressive politics, and pressing issues like climate change.
