A man filming a massive slip in Northland was forced to yell at a bystander as more of the road washed away.

Vision has emerged of a man filming a huge road slip in Northland yelling at a bystander as more of the road suddenly washes away.

Footage posted to the Houhora Community Notice Board on Saturday shows water cascading down a makeshift waterfall where the road once was with a man standing on the edge of the road.

Noticing that more of the road is starting to slip into the water, the man filming yells out "watch out," with the man able to step to safety.

The washout on State Highway One on Friday afternoon created a hole in the road 20 metres long and four to five metres deep near Pukenui, about 40 kilometres north of Kaitaia, closing the highway.

The NZ Transport Agency says repair crews made good progress over the weekend and the road is expected to reopen mid week.

This morning 25 vehicles were escorted by police along a private forestry track to bypass the washout.
