November 8, 2017

Tamati Coffey has promised to be the voice for many different groups of Kiwis during a passionate maiden speech in Parliament today.

The new Labour MP got a standing ovation from his colleagues after a powerful address.

Mr Coffey finished his address with a list of people he would be advocating for during his time in office.

"I will be a voice for the people of my electorate, I will also be a voice for the many young people out there who need a role model and some guidance.

"I will also be a voice for those Maori who are still trying to find a place in the world, I will be a voice for the GLBT community who need someone to make sure we are making young gay kids into the best possible kids they can be," Mr Coffey said.

The new Labour MP also addressed the issue of worker rights and the minimum wage emphatically stating: "Do we need minimum wage, hell yes".

He also said New Zealand is his passion and he is here to make it "the best little country in the world".

Mr Coffey, a former TVNZ weather presenter, got a standing ovation from his colleagues for the speech, while a Maori waiata rang out around the House.

Mr Coffey beat Waiariki incumbent Te Ururoa Flavell to gain entry into Parliament, a win which effectively ended the Maori Party's chances of having any representatives in the current government.
