Watch: Christchurch mayor pays tribute to victims during earthquake memorial service

Today marks eight years since the Christchurch earthquake claimed 185 lives.

Today marks eight years since the magnitude 6.3 Christchurch earthquake that claimed 185 lives.

A civic ceremony was observed at 12.30pm at The Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial beside the Avon River.

Christchurch mayor Lianne Dalziel paid tribute to those who lost their lives and those injured, as well others affected and their families, including first responders.

"Forged in tragedy, the bonds that were formed that day - and in the days, weeks, months and years that have followed - will never be broken,” she said.

The names of the people who lost their lives that day were read out by representatives of the first responders and representatives of
the international communities affected.

Wreaths were then placed at the memorial site alongside the wall inscribed with victims' names.
