Watch: Businesses evacuated as torrential rain floods Mosgiel's main drag

November 20, 2018

Shop owners in the Otago town sandbagged their front doors to try and keep floodwaters out.

Some businesses in Mosgiel have been forced to shut up shop as they battle to keep rising floodwaters out of their premises.

Heavy rain in the Otago region has led to road closures and flooding this afternoon, with more rain forecast to come.

Footage taken by 1 NEWS shows residents walking through ankle deep water down the main street of Mosgiel as emergency services try and drain the streets.

Choies Takeaways and surrounding businesses have been evacuated, with sandbags laid down to try and protect the stores.

Mosgiel and South Dunedin residents can collect sandbags if they're concerned about flooding.

RNZ reports that sandbags are at the Memorial Park and the Hotel Taieri car parks in Mosgiel, and at the Ice Stadium car park in South Dunedin.

Further rain is forecast to hit already sodden parts of Otago this afternoon.

MetService has forecast between 40 to 70 millimetres of rain in eastern Otago today.

Conditions are predicted to ease this evening.
