Watch: Business owners head to Parliament to protest growing levels of crime and violence in NZ

Around ten members of the Indian and Chinese communities, many of them dairy owners, showed up to Parliament today to put a stop to crime and violence in the community.

A group of small business owners have gone to Parliament today to tell politicians something needs to be done about the growing levels of crime and violence in New Zealand.

Around 10 members of the Indian and Chinese communities, many of them dairy owners, have this afternoon met with the Police and Justice Ministers about the issue.

“Continuing brutal attacks in broad daylight in public places, on small businesses, dairies, shop owners, residents and international students show the offenders have no fear of being caught, no fear of police, the law of the land or the consequences whatsoever,” a memorandum to Ministers states.

The Crime Prevention Group is calling on the government to take urgent action, including introducing tougher penalties for assaults and aggravated robberies, increasing the number of police officers, introducing a special task force in Auckland, a heavier penalty on those reselling stolen goods and more support for victims of crime.

The group also wants more police stations in the suburbs.

“These actions are quite urgent. There needs to be a deterrent, to stop these violent assaults on hardworking shop owners,” Crime Prevention Group chair Sunny Kaushal said.

The group will next meet with government officials in Auckland in the New Year.
