He remembers as a young man hearing about how Sir Colin would do all the farming work and then go to training, he tried it himself and realised what physical and mental strength it required.

The Prime Minister last saw him at the shearing champs in Te Kuiti a few months ago, he wasn't well but was warm, hospitable and in great spirits.

He says he is happy to discuss with family about how the country can acknowledge the great man.

At the launch of Labour's election campaign, Jacinda Ardern also paid tribute to Sir Colin.

"All of our thoughts are with his family’."

The Labour leader spared a moment to acknowledge the All Blacks legend at her party's election campaign launch.
