Parliamentarians returned to the house today for the first time in 2019, with many of them clearly relishing the chance to unleash the attacks and one-liners they’d worked on over summer.
Jacinda Ardern and Simon Bridges began the proceedings, attacking the Opposition and the Government respectively over housing and KiwiBuild.
“How many affordable homes did the last Government build? Absolutely none,” Ms Ardern said in her opening statement.
“How many KiwiBuild houses have they built? This is not a trick question, I’m asking about the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi, our founding document. How many, Grant Robertson? Forty-seven,” Mr Bridges retorted as he made a motion of no confidence in the Government.
Mr Bridges also had Greens co-leader Marama Davidson in his sights.
“Cameras on fishing vessels scrapped, Marama Davidson, I think that’s because she’s too concerned about the c-word and not concerned about the seafood," he said in reference to her campaign to reclaim the c-word.
"Look at her, she’s pretending she’s not listening.”
As ever, though, it was probably Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters who won the verbal jousting with this takedown of Mr Bridges.
