Carrying little Heeni with her into the Beehive, the Northland-based list MP was greeted by a group of media waiting for the elected politicians to arrive.

All eyes were for baby Heeni, however, who grabbed the media's full attention.

"Trevor Mallard says he already bags the first hug," Ms Prime said.

Ms Prime was able to get in a few points in on politics among the many questions about Heeni's first flight.

Ms Prime says she's excited to be representing her electorate in parliament after a pleasing result for the Labour Party on Saturday night.

"I've got a very long list of things I would like to do, particularly for Northland, and (would) love to get my teeth into any of the portfolios I'm given."

Ms Prime also added she could work with Winston Peters to form a government.

"We've worked with Winston in the Northland for the last couple of years since the by-election," she said.
