Watch: 'I am… a human being' – tired Clare Curran admits mistakes, speaks of personal toll after quitting as Minister

September 7, 2018

“I was really proud to have served in the coalition Government Ministry,” the Dunedin South MP said.

Clare Curran spoke to media today from her Dunedin South electorate for the first time since resigning from her Ministerial responsibilities.

"I am, like the rest of you, a human being, and I can no longer endure the relentless pressure I have been under. I'd made some mistakes, they weren't deliberate, undermining of the political system," she said.

"But, my mistakes have been greatly amplified and the pressure on me has become intolerable."

It was announced today Ms Curran resigned from her remaining Ministerial portfolios, after being stripped from her roles as Government Digital Services and Open Government responsibilities last month for failing to disclose a meeting for a second time.

She was also rattled in Parliament on Wednesday when asked about the use of her personal email for Government business, appearing flustered in offering a rambling and incoherent response to a question from National's Melissa Lee.

Ms Curran told media today that she uses her Gmail account "infrequently for work".

"It hasn't been used to conceal anything."

She said she was proud to have served in the coalition Government as a Minister.

The Prime Minister said Ms Curran made an "error of judgement" and "supports her" decision.
