Ten-year-old girl hands over handmade brooch to Duchess of Sussex

October 28, 2018

Alexandra MacKay was delighted when Meghan Markle decided to wear the brooch.

An almighty scream rang out from a large crowd as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived at Pukeahu National War Memorial Park, their only public walkabout in Wellington.

The crowds ignored the cold and gloomy skies as they held up signs from behind a barricade around the park, where the royal couple laid a wreath in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior, followed by a moment of silence.

The royal couple were greeted by thousands of cheering fans at the Pukeahu National War Memorial in Wellington.

Among the gifts received from the crowd include multiple bags of pineapple lumps, a large dog soft toy and a handmade brooch, which Meghan chose to wear.

The brooch designer, 10-year-old Alexandra MacKay from Wellington, said she was in shock after meeting the Duchess and having her accept the red rose brooch she made this morning with her friend Rebecca Sainsbury, 10.

On an afternoon of memorable moments this was one of them, as Harry reached into the crowd to say thanks for the gift.

One elated member of the crowd proudly displayed a sign which read: "Pregnancy suits you, Duchess!"

The sign was in reference to Meghan's role on US television series Suits, before her marriage to Prince Harry.

Another young fan could be seen holding up a sign which said: "Hi Harry, I'm Harry," in large green letters.

Tomorrow, Prince Harry and Meghan will visit a Wellington café where they will meet young people from a number of mental health projects operating in New Zealand offering support to other young people through helplines, social media, websites and school-based programmes.

They will then travel to Abel Tasman National Park where they will learn about the history of the forest and the environmental challenges of protecting the park's habitat as well as take part in a tree planting.
