Jenny Suo had the fun task of talking to the camera while being battered by strong winds.

A 1 NEWS reporter has bore the brunt of severe winds at Mt Maunganui while covering the storm that's lashing the North Island.

It took a couple of goes but Jenny Suo eventually delivered a piece to camera as she was been buffeted by the strong winds last night.

The usually busy waterfront road was deserted Thursday night as the sea washed over it.

Heavy rain started beating down in Whangamata at 3pm this afternoon.
