The Gisborne District Council has issued a warning after a number of unauthorised leg hold possum traps were found placed in a Gisborne reserve.

Council biosecurity officers retrieved a number of traps from sites on Titirangi Reserve after Whaia Titirangi cadets found a distressed possum caught in a leg hold trap last week.

"Laying traps in a public area such as Titirangi puts the welfare of public users, children and pets at risk," biosecurity team leader, Phil Karaitiana said in a statement.

"Some person has laid these traps without council permission and also failed to check and remove captured animals within 12 hours of sunrise."

The Gisborne District Council is asking for anyone with information on the unauthorised traps to contact them 06 867 2049.
