Wanaka or Central Otago – is there an alternative to expanding Queenstown Airport?

October 4, 2018

Community backlash stopped a proposed expansion in Queenstown, and executives are now eyeing another tourist hotspot.

After community backlash saw Queenstown Airport ditch its expansion plans, attention is turning to other alternatives to deal with increased flight demands.

Air New Zealand is interested in a new regional airport in Central Otago.

"Time for us to have a bigger bolder braver conversation about creating a new Central Otago regional airport," Air New Zealand chief executive Christopher Luxon said in a stakeholders address.

However, Central Otago Mayor Tim Cadogan says his attempts to engage the national carrier about the idea haven't been returned.

"There's been no direct communication, and that's despite us trying to get hold of them and say, shall we talk?" Mr Cadogan told 1 NEWS.

Airport executives now say they're looking at expanding Wanaka Airport instead.

"Having sustainable regional air services and ensuring that there's the right platform. We think between Queenstown Airport and Wanaka there is that right platform," Queenstown Airport chief executive Colin Keel says.

However, that idea's also concerning locals, with business owners questioning whether the town can cope with more visitors.

Air New Zealand also says Wanaka airport would need significant investment.

They claim the runway isn't strong enough for larger aircraft and it could also require an extension.
