Wakefield residents forced to flee Tasman fire spend first night back home

The fire near the Tasman town forced residents out.

Wakefield residents have spent their first night back in their homes after being evacuated for three days because of the Tasman fire.

Despite some late-night concerns about wind conditions picking up, things went "really well" in Wakefield according to Nelson Tasman Civil Defence.

The area was patrolled by 60 police officers and the New Zealand Defence Force overnight.

About 1000 houses were evacuated over the past week, forcing about 3000 to flee.

However, locals are being warned to be ready to leave again at a moments notice if the Pigeon Valley Blaze picks up again.

It that does happen, an emergency mobile message and siren will sound.

For those still evacuated, the Civil Defence Centre at Saxton Stadium has closed, but will reopen at the Richmond New Life Church, 85 Wensley Road, at 8am today.
