A family living near Oamaru took the opportunity to paddle board on their paddock in Kurow yesterday afternoon, which was left underwater following the storm.
Amy Hawkins, 13, said "it was awesome".
Mother and property owner Odelle Hawkins said 42mm of rain fell, "but there was 122mm in our high country that had to go somewhere".
She said it had flooded three times in nine years, "but this is the worst by far".
"Never have we seen it like this."
It has ruined their winter feed.
Ms Hawkins described it as a big torrent all around them.
Today their property is drying up, a starkly different sight than yesterday when water rushed through their property and pushed over their fence.
The road leading to her friend’s house nearby is looking worse for wear after the weather.
