A 27-year-old man is facing three charges of assault with intent to injure, assaulting an officer and possession of an offensive weapon over the alleged attack in Morrinsville.
He will appear in the Hamilton District Court today.
Police were called to a Moorhouse Street home at about midday yesterday after a complaint of a man with a hammer acting strangely, Sergeant Will Hamilton said.
The officer who went to speak with the man was then punched 10 to 15 times, before managing to taser the attacker.
Members of the public came to the help the officer, who wound up with some bumps and bruises, Sgt Hamilton said.
