Waiheke Island group pushes to become world's first island to have all electric vehicles

The aim is to have zero emissions by 2030.

A group on Waiheke Island, located in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf, is pushing for it to become the world's first residential island to have only electric vehicles.

The aim is to have zero emissions by 2030 - and yes, visitors will be expected to climb on board too.

Max Parkin, part of the group Electric Island, said: "On the island, you can do a maximum of 40-50km and you have gone around to the start again. Therefore, to have these small-range EVs are something we want to encourage".

However, while the roads run out before the batteries do, that's not the only reason to go green.

Waiheke local board chair Cath Handley said the move "fits with a number of initiatives, including making tourism sustainable".

Currently, only 86 of the 7000 vehicles registered on the island are electric.

Electric Island believes the initiative will have social, environmental and economic benefits as well, with the price of petrol on the island being the highest in the country.

The community has yet to be formally consulted on the plan, but while some locals can't afford the up-front costs of the switch, others say when it comes to carbon footprints, they can't afford not to.
