Vodafone was fined $350,000 in Auckland District Court today after continuing to bill customers who had terminated contracts.

The billing errors occurred between 2012 and 2018 affecting Vodafone customers who gave advance notice about terminating their services.

In a statement released today Vodafone says "on average, affected customers were over-charged by $9.70 each."

"Every customer deserves an accurate bill every month. We clearly fell well short of that in this instance, and for that I apologise. If you get it wrong, you should put your hand up, acknowledge it, and make it right," Vodafone CEO Jason Paris says.

Vodafone says they have applied credits to the accounts of all the affected customers and have attempted to reach out and reimburse them directly. If the customer couldn't be contacted Vodafone has donated the amount to charity.

"I want to reassure customers Vodafone has not profited in any way from these historical billing errors, and we have subsequently invested significant time and money into improving our systems and processes to prevent a recurrence," says Mr Paris.

A total of 29,425 customers were overcharged from the errors, resulting in a total of $285,359.37
