Vinyl lovers rejoice on International Record Store Day

Queues stretched out the doors at independent record stores across the country.

Queues stretched out the doors at independent record stores across New Zealand today as enthusiasts lined up to enjoy some bargains on International Record Store Day.

In Christchurch, the doors opened early at the Penny Lane store, but some arrived at a run to comb the stacks for treasures.

"This is a day that they've been waiting for for months. And because you come shopping with people who are into the same thing it's an exciting day. It's a big day, it's a big deal," said Garry Knight, Penny Lane manager.

It was one day a year when vinyl aficionados could worship at the turntables en masse, all around the world.

Records have had a revival. New record sales have increased by nine per cent since 2016, but when it comes to second hand records the growth is exponential.

"I've got a special record room that they're all in," said record collector Rob McDonald.

Mr McDonald said he has "rather large" record collection - a bit of an understatement.

"About four thousand records. Takes up a lot of room, I can assure you," he said.

Another collector today snapped up 60 albums at 50 per cent off, and at his home another collection in the thousands awaits.
