Video: 'A yacht at the end of the driveway!' Catamaran washes up on Nelson road during storm surges

November 8, 2017

Craig Fraser was cleaning up after Martin Holmes' catamaran was blown on to the shore on Martin Street.

A catamaran washed up on to a Nelson road overnight, leaving startled residents and the owner to clean up.

The boat washed upon Martin Street outside Craig Fraser's place, and he got in touch with owner Martin Holmes.

It cut power to thousands of homes and even lifted a boat out of the water.

Mr Fraser said the storm surges often came up on to the road, but last night's storm brought "big logs".

Mr Holmes said "Paul the neighbour rang us to tell us he boat was outside his front door at about 2.30 this morning".

"So we came down in our gumboots and got a bit wet and had a look around and decided the tide had turned and we should go back to bed."

The damage to the catamaran was not severe, Mr Holmes said, with only a few scratches on the hull and a broken tiller.

"Right on the high tide, it's just slipped up and stopped".

A crane would be brought up to swing the boat back on to beach today.

Power outages were also experienced overnight in Marlborough.
