Video: What a three-metre sea level rise in Auckland would look like - is this what 2090 looks like?

November 6, 2017

This simulation shows which parts of Auckland would be underwater at high tide if the sea were to rise by three metres.

Sea level rise due to climate change will certainly be on the agenda when world leaders meet in Germany this week for the Bonn Climate Change Conference.

The issue affects many regions and countries, with a large proportion of the world's population living next to the ocean or in low-lying areas.

1 NEWS reporter Barbara Dreaver is currently in Fiji, the prime minister of which, Frank Bainimarama, is heading up the talks in Bonn.

Dreaver grew up in Kirbibati - an island nation which is acutely threatened by sea level rise.

1 NEWS created a visualisation in 2015 of what a three-metre sea level rise might look like Auckland - without the added storm surges and waves - after climate scientist Dr James Hansen predicted sea levels could rise by the that amount by the close of this century.

By 2050 it's estimated up to 54 per cent of the nation’s main island will be inundated with sea water.
