A powerful haka from Lindisfarne College students has farewelled a prominent Hawke's Bay farming and rugby figure.

Mr Renton died suddenly last week, to the shock of many in the community.

More than 1000 people packed a public service to pay tribute to Paul Renton at Hastings' A & P show grounds exhibition hall, where mourners had to watch and listen from outside due to the turnout.

The 54-year-old died suddenly last week on his farm near Hastings to the shock of many in the community.

He was the recipient of the 2017 Hawke's Bay farmer of the year award for his work on Glenmore station, which has been in the Renton family since the 1940s.

The man they called 'Butch' was also a prominent rugby player, turning out for three provinces, New Zealand junior and colts sides as well as scoring a try and receiving player of the day in a trial for the All Blacks in the late '80s.

He was husband to Marie and father to three children, with son Hugh representing the Hurricanes this year.
