Bill English has uncharacteristically weighed into US politics, making a direct assessment of President Donald Trumps threats towards North Korea today as "not helpful".
Prime Minister English expressed his serious concern at President Trump's incendiary comments today that "fire and fury" would face North Korea if any more threats towards the US were made.
"Yes I am, I'm worried that those comments are not helpful when the situation's so tense and I think you're seeing reaction from North Korea that indicates that kind of comment's more likely to escalate then to settle things," Mr English said.
The Prime Minister said his office had not directly expressed these concerns to the Trump administration yet, but said "certinally if that type of commentary continued we would".
Earlier today President Trump made his strongest threat of action against North Korea yet at a briefing at his golf course in Bedminster, New Jersey.
"North Korea had best not make any more threats to the United States. They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen," President Trump said.
