Those hoping to make an early get-away for the long weekend appear out of luck, with traffic down to a crawl in some places already.
NZTA said roads in Auckland were already congested with SH1 at Takanini especially bad.
They were warning of delays for those heading north as well, with Puhoi to Wellsford particularly bad.
"Traffic is expected to be busy through this area between 12.30pm and 8pm for north-bound traffic today,'' the NZTA said.
"Road users are advised to expect delays and allow extra time for their journeys when travelling through this area.''
