US whistle-blower Chelsea Manning granted work visa, will appear in two NZ shows

Immigration officials have allowed the former intelligence analyst to apply for a visa.

US whistle-blower Chelsea Manning will appear at shows in Auckland and Wellington after being granted a work visa by Immigration New Zealand.

Ms Manning was unable to obtain an Australian visa and will appear in Melbourne and Brisbane shows via satellite video link from New Zealand.

She is a former army intelligence analyst best-known for leaking classified military and diplomatic documents to Wikileaks.

Ms Manning served nearly seven years of a 35-year sentence in prison for her disclosure.

Her application for a NZ work visa sparked fierce debate on both sides of politics.

The Prime Minister was asked her view on Immigration granting Ms Manning a visa to the country.

The whistleblower spent seven years in prison for leaking US state secrets, but she’s no threat here, the Green Party MP says.

They say Manning shouldn’t be allowed to profit from her crimes.

Former Labour MP Georgina Beyer, who was the world’s first openly transgender mayor and openly transgender MP, will host the two shows.
