The head of the Council of Trade Unions has confirmed she has lung cancer.
In an email to union delegates, Helen Kelly says she is undergoing further tests to determine the extent and nature of the cancer.
The 50-year-old says she feels remarkably well - all things considered and that rumours of her "demise" are exaggerated.
"There is no confirmation of what else it might be or any prognosis," Ms Kelly says.
Ms Kelly told ONE News she is not a smoker and has never smoked.
The former primary school teacher will continue in her role as president of the union and expects to have a clearer picture from doctors in the next week.
"Thanks so much for all your beautiful support this week. It has been amazing," Ms Kelly told her trade union colleagues.
Helen Kelly holds an LLB from Victoria University and is also a qualified teacher.
She doesn't wish to comment further at this stage.
