Two wharf workers remain in hospital after incident at Napier Port

May 1, 2018

Two men are in a stable condition after an incident at Napier Port last night saw six people rushed to Hawke's Bay Hospital.

The hospital said that four have now been discharged.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand told the NZ Herald a digger's turbo unit had blown, leading to exhaust fumes billowing into the hold of a ship where stevedores were working.

Napier Port told 1 NEWS they are "currently gathering the facts" as to what happened.

A spokesperson for the port confirmed the incident happened about 8pm on board the Nord Yilan.

The stevedores were working for the ISO company at the time and regulator Maritime NZ has started an investigation.

Napier Port culture and capability manager Viv Bull said their thoughts are with those involved.

"We are disappointed that an incident has happened on our port ... as the landowner, Napier Port takes a strong interest in the safe practice of companies operating on our site."
