Man who scaled Wellington's Terrace Tunnel comes down safely, arrested

The man climbed onto the tunnel after a two-car-crash earlier in the day.

A man who scaled the top of Wellington's Terrrace Tunnel this afternoon has been arrested.

The 31-year-old man climbed down safely from the pipes at 10:30pm after speaking to a family member and Police negotiators.  

He was taken from the scene in a police car without any further incident.

Before he came down, he spoke to a relative at length on the edge of the motorway and smoked several cigarettes.

Within minutes of the man being taken from the scene by Police many of the roadblocks in the area of the Terrace Tunnel had been removed. 

Police, fire and ambulance services responded to a crash on the southbound exit of the tunnel nearly 11 hours ago.

The man is currently in Police custody where he will be medically assessed.

The Terrace Tunnel was closed after the incident but has since re-opened.

Metlink says the incident caused heavy traffic congestion in the area and delays to bus services travelling through the Wellington CBD.

Some bus stops were closed on Ghuznee Street, Taranaki Street and The Terrace.
