December 6, 2018

The connection between the Albert St and Commercial Bay tunnels was unveiled today.

Two tunnels being dug for the Auckland City Rail Link have been connected in what is being seen as a breakthrough for the $3.45 billion project.

Mayor Phil Goff and City Rail Link chief executive Sean Sweeney unveiled the connection between the Albert Street and Commercial Bay tunnels this morning.

Mr Sweeney said, "It's a real sign of progress bringing together two tunnels".

"There'll be another breakthrough through to Britomart sometime in the middle of next year and then you'll basically be able to see the tunnel run from Britomart all the way up Albert Street, and that's a really great milestone for the project."

City Rail Link will be able to carry 54,000 passengers during peak hours.

The finished track is expected to be completed in 2024.
