Two teenagers killed after head on collision north of Christchurch

Just after 6am this morning two cars collided head on along SH1 just north of Amberley, killing two and injuring three others.

Two 16-year-olds have died after two vehicles collided just north of Amberley in Canterbury this morning.

A head on collision along SH1 near the town of Amberley has left two 16-year-olds dead this morning.

The fatal crash happened just after 6am on Glasnevin Road 3km north of Amberley.

Sergeant Rene Pabst says one of the cars "crossed the centre line, hitting an oncoming vehicle causing both of the vehicles to spin around".

Another teenager who was in the car and two men who were in the other vehicle have been airlifted to Christchurch Hospital with critical and moderate injuries.

Glasnevin Road, SH1 remains closed due to the crash and diversions are in place at SH1/Innes Road to the north and Watties Road to the south.

Severe delays are expected and motorists are asked to avoid the area.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating to understand the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Police are yet to officially identify, and notify the teenagers next of kin of the crash.
