Two people die in Northland crash bringing Easter road toll to six

Two people have died in a two car collision on State Highway 10, seven kilometres south of Kerikeri in Northland.

The two deceased are the driver and passenger from the same car.

Emergency services received the call to the scene at 11:19pm on Monday night.

The two fatalities brings the Easter road toll to six. The Easter road toll period began at 4pm Thursday and ended at 6am today.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson says two people were ejected from a car with a third person initially trapped in a vehicle.

A rescue helicopter was dispatched to the scene where two other people received serious injuries and another two with minor.

Two people were transported to Bay of Islands Hospital.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.

State Highway 10 is closed with diversions in place.

Diversions are via State Highway 10, Te Ahu Ahu Road, Waimate North Road, and Wiroa Road back to State Highway 10.

"Look at it!," resident Mary Jane Hutchinson exclaimed as she filmed the hundreds of live fish writhing on the shore.  

"Wow, do you believe it?!"

"Just jumping out of the water all along the beach - amazing."
