Two people have died following a crash on State Highway One at Rakaia in Canterbury this evening.
Emergency services were called to the scene near Wilkinson Road at 7pm.
The road is expected to remain closed for some time while the Serious Crash Unit examines the scene.
Police say diversions are in place and motorists should avoid the area if possible.
