A police patrol attempted to pull over a stolen Honda Civic at about 2:15am but the driver failed to stop.

Police say a pursuit was started but abandoned almost immediately "due to the dangerous driving of the fleeing driver through the CBD".

A short time later police say the still speeding vehicle crashed into a light-pole on Queen St.

All four occupants of the vehicle were taken to Masterton Hospital where two have since died as a result of their injuries.

All occupants of the vehicle are believed to be from Wairarapa and are aged in their mid teens.

A Wellington District Serious Crash Investigator has attended the scene of the crash and investigations are ongoing.

The IPCA has also been informed.
