Two injured after shots fired outside bar in Napier

February 28, 2021

Two people have been injured after shots were fired from a vehicle into a group of people outside a bar in Napier.

Police says a vehicle with five men inside drove passed the bar in West Quay at 12.30 this morning firing shots into a group standing outside.

The two groups appear to know each other, police say. They believe the shooting stemmed from an earlier altercation between rival gangs.

One of the men standing outside the bar has injuries to his hand and a member of the bar's staff has sustained an injury to their groin.

Both were treated at the scene for moderate and serious injury. One remains in hospital in a stable condition.

A number of incidents involving firearms have been reported across the Hawke's Bay and Waiora over recent weeks. A number of warrants have also been executed by police across the region with a number of arrests made and firearms and ammunition recovered.

Police say due to the incident officers across the Hawke's Bay will temporarily be carrying firearms.
