August 10, 2021

Two people have been injured after a car was driven erratically through the streets of South Auckland this afternoon.

The car was first spotted speeding on Great South Road in Takanini around 1.35 pm.

Police didn't chase but called in the Eagle helicopter to monitor it.

Two passengers were dropped off at a property on Mahia Road before the car drove off.

They have since been arrested.

Nearby police laid down spikes but the vehicle continued driving off “erratically and at high speed”.

“The vehicle was observed crashing into another vehicle and a traffic light at the intersection of Great South Road and Alfriston Road,” a police spokesperson said.

The driver was arrested having suffered moderate injuries while the passenger was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Cordons in place surrounding the intersection of Great South Road and Alfriston/Weymouth Road near Southmall Shopping Centre are likely to be in place for some time.

Motorists are being asked to avoid the area if possible while police carry out their investigation.
