Two fronts set to bring wet weather to parts of South Island and lower North Island over the weekend

Enjoy the sunshine while it lasts New Zealand, with two cold fronts forecast to hit the South Island over the weekend and early next week set to bring severe rain and gale-force winds.

The first of the fronts will move northeast across the South Island on Saturday with a MetService rain warning in place for Fiordland.

A second front is forecast to move across southern and central New Zealand on Tuesday.

"Periods of rain are expected about western parts of the South Island and lower North Island with these fronts," a MetService Severe Weather Outlook reads.

Gale-force winds are also forecast by MetService for multiple regions early next week, with moderate confidence of gale-force westerlies about coastal Southland and Clutha on Monday.

On Tuesday, there is also moderate confidence of north-west winds reaching severe gale in Southland, inland parts of Otago and the Canterbury High Country.

There is also low confidence for gales on Tuesday in eastern Otago, the Canterbury Plains and parts of central New Zealand, including Wellington, Marlborough and Wairarapa.

Late on Tuesday there is low confidence of severe gale in exposed parts of central Hawke's Bay and northern Wairarapa as well as coastal Southland and Clutha.
