Two dead in Waikato and Counties Manukau crashes

Two people have died in separate crashes in the upper North Island tonight.

Emergency services are currently at the scene of a crash on State Highway 5, near Waiohotu Rd in eastern Waikato, after a truck collided with a tree.

One person died from the crash, police said.

Meanwhile, in Counties Manukau a car has left the road and crashed down a bank on Awhitu Rd near Douglas Rd, in Pollok.

The male driver of the vehicle died, while a female passenger has moderate injuries, police said.

Diversions are in place for traffic to travel onto Ponsford Rd south of the crash, and J Renall Rd north of the crash.

The Police Serious Crash Unit is investigating both crashes.

Emergency services are at the scene and the Police Serious Crash unit will be investigating.
