Two dead after being hit by bus in South Auckland

Emergency services at the scene at Puhinui Rd, Papatoetoe, in South Acukland where a bus hit and killed two pedestrians.

Two men have died after they were hit by a bus in South Auckland last night. 

The accident occurred around 7pm in the suburb of Papatoetoe.

Emergency services are at the scene at the intersection of Wyllie Rd and Puhinui Rd. 

The road is closed and diversions are in place on Puhinui Rd at Noel Burnside Rd and Vision Place, and on Wyllie Rd at Gifford Rd.

Auckland Police Senior Sargent Peter Marriott spoke at the scene in Papatoetoe.

"It's incredibly tragic that two people have lost their lives this evening who were just out for the evening and our thoughts are with the families at this time," Sargent Marriott said.

Go Bus chief executive Calum Haslop released a statement on the accident that involved one of their buses. 

"We are extremely distressed to have since learned that the two pedestrians have lost their lives," Haslop said.

"We are cooperating fully with police in trying to determine exactly what happened. Words cannot begin to express our sorrow to the families of those who lost their lives.

"We are supporting the driver, who will understandably be stood down whilst the investigation is underway and their wellbeing is cared for."

Police have asked motorists to avoid the area.
