Two Air NZ workers self-isolating after potential Covid-19 exposure, but risk deemed low

Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield said they have since been reclassified as casual contacts.

Two Air New Zealand workers were told to self-isolate at home after potentially being exposed to a Covid-19 case recently, the airline confirmed today.

However, the risk of infection has since been deemed by the Auckland Regional Public Health Service to be low.

The positive case was a crew member of a Malaysia Airlines freight flight that came into Auckland several days ago, Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield told reporters today.

He said the crew member was taken to a quarantine facility after being symptomatic upon arrival, where they tested positive. The other members of the crew were then also transferred to the quarantine facility.

“As part of the investigation, there were two Air New Zealand ground employees who, as a precautionary approach, were initially considered to be possible contacts.

"However, on further review, they’ve now been classified as casual contacts. They were wearing full PPE, there was no physical contact and so at this point, there’s no further action required or needed regarding self-isolation or testing."

In a statement, a Northern Region Health Coordination Centre (NRHCC) spokesperson told 1 NEWS the workers "have been tested and are awaiting their results, which are expected later today".

"The case is a crew member from another airline and is in the Jet Park quarantine facility."
