'Turn that trend around' – urgent road safety changes to be put in place ahead of summer holidays

November 21, 2017

Associate Transport Minister Julie Anne-Genter says the road toll is "unacceptably high".

Urgent road safety changes will be in place before the summer holidays begin, according to the Associate Transport Minister.

Julie Anne Genter called a meeting today with police, NZTA and the Ministry of Transport over the "unacceptably high" road toll so far this year.

"I think that given the high road toll this year there's an increased need to ensure we're doing everything we possibly can both in the short term and the long term to turn that trend around," Ms Genter said.

She says immediate solutions could include urgent road improvement in some areas and greater driver awareness.

So for in 2017 332 people have been killed on NZ roads.

At the same time last year, 285 people had died.
